Wiltshire MBT Enters Commissioning Stage

Wiltshire’s first Mechanical Biological Treatment plant was conceived back in 2009; DGH Ltd has had strong links with the project since the beginning through its work for Italian technology provider, Entsorga SpA. The Westbury plant will take in 60,000 tons of black bin waste each year, converting it into a dry, homogenous Solid Recovered Fuel.

The construction period for the project commissioned by Hills Waste Management has now reached completion; DGH Ltd is working on the commissioning of the plant. DGH has worked closely with Entsorga throughout the project providing Project Management and technical consultation during the build, and is proud to continue this relationship during the final stages of the project.

The plant will take residual MSW from Wiltshire County Council, diverting 80% of the waste received away from landfill. A network of fans will ensure that the inside of the plant is continuously under negative pressure, preventing odours from escaping untreated into the atmosphere. The air will instead pass through a bio-filter that will remove odours and other unwanted chemicals such as VOC’s.

The fuel that is to be produced by the plant was originally intended to be utilised in the kiln of a nearby cement works owned by Lafarge as a replacement for coal, however production has now ceased so instead the fuel will go to a combined heat and power facility.

The plant received waste for the first time on the 25th of February, the commissioning period will last until September 2013 when the plant will be officially handed over.
